Growing up, this is not what I was taught. There seemed to be an "appropriate way" for kids to behave and if they weren't, there tended to be more punishment than connection. I believe that we are all always doing the best we can with the skills, brain development, and resources we have. Kids are sponges and they are literally learning what we show them. When they are having a hard time, we get the opportunity to show them how it feels to be loved, understood, and cared for as we would want someone to do for us. In parenting this way with Ilya, I have found that when I create space to connect, understand, and empathize, the time naturally comes when we are close and grounded to talk about other ways that we can manage stress and challenges moving forward.

Keeping this truth front and center in my awareness has made me a more connected, compassionate, and effective parent.
